Radio jockey

A radio jockey or RJ is a person who hosts a radio talk show, where he/she selects the music to be played by interacting with the audience via telephone. Lately, the term started to be associated with radio show hosts who interact online with viewers, with or without playing a song.Etymologically, the term roots from disc jockey, a term used to describe a person who plays music in discos. However it is still uncertain when it first became popular. Its origin clearly shows a regional bias as although quite generic in description, it is used specifically in India. This confirms its Indian origin.

Today, Radio Jockeying is considered to be a 'hot' profession and these voices have become so famous, that they have become household names like RJ SUNY Ameen Sayani, Shamshir, Karan, Nitin, Dev, Rajeev Tyagi, Hardeep Chandpuri etc. Today they simply rule the 'air waves'.One of the most respected names in India in the field of Radio Jockey training is the Academy of Broadcasting which was set-up in the year 2003, by internationally renowned Radio Jockey Hardeep Singh Chandpuri, the person responsible for revolutionising the radio scene in north India.

The medium of radio, which was once considered to be the synonym of boredom for the youngsters, achieved brand new heights with his fresh style of presentation and today it is his name that is associated with the complete ‘makeover’ of the radio scene in the northern region besides this he is also well-known for training and grooming the Radio Jockeys of tomorrow and today.

There are numerous media houses that have branched into the radio scene. Because of the high licensing fees and limited wave bands being made available only big, corporate houses can be found in the scene with almost no small companies and definitely no individuals in sharp contrast to Western radio where there are many small-time players.
